| Parker (Now Mojo) In His New Home |
mangomaddy writes, "On May 14, 2009 "Parker" went home to his forever family and became "Mojo". Anxiously awaiting for him was his new Dad, Mom and a big brother named "Mango". Parker's sister "Marcy" aka "Mojito" will be joining the family later on in the month when she is feeling better. "Mojo" wants all to know that he has a bed of his own, although he likes to snuggle with "Mango", a yard to play in and lots of toys. All are very happy and want to thank the wonderful people at Safe Harbor for all of the TLC and for blending this family together!

mangomaddy writes, "It has been some time since Safe Harbor's Beagle Blog has been updated. It seems as if Safe Harbor's Celebrity Dog Wash took every available moment and every ounce of energy leaving little time for anything else. With the Dog Wash over, today was my day to update the Beagle Blog. I was not, however, expecting to have to report that tragically, this morning we lost Topaz, the last of our beagle puppies. She passed away suddenly at Safe Harbor in spite of the best efforts of our veterinary staff. Like her brothers and sister before her, her passing occurred quickly and with little warning. Until a couple of weeks ago, we thought the four surviving puppies of the original six were pretty much out of danger. Then, unexpectedly, Kojak passed away one evening. Staff veterinarian Dr. Sherri Gross offered to come in to our veterinary hospital at 10:00 PM to check over Kojak's brother, Marley, as he too had the strangely distended abdomen of his brother and sisters. Dr. Gross and foster mommy Taylor Roca, performed every diagnostic available including x-rays, blood tests, fecal tests, a procedure to remove excess fluid from Marley's abdomen and an enema to help him pass the glut of internal parasites dead from earlier dewormings. Dr. Gross and Taylor worked diligently until almost midnight. The fear was that in spite of repreated dewormings, the puppies may have been irreparably and terminally damaged by the internal parasites they were born with; not to mention the potential for the deadly effects of the parvovirus they were exposed to at birth. Everything was done that could be done. The waiting began again. Then, heartbreakingly, one by one, over a period of almost two weeks, we lost Marley, then Sapphire, and today, Topaz. "

mangomaddy writes, "What fun it is to watch these little ones chow down on their bottles. Eat, sleep, eat, sleep. Safe, warm and loved. The puppies are still doing well, but their path has not been entirely smooth. All of the puppies have all had to have transfusions. First Sapphire and Kojak and then a day or so later, Topaz and Marley. Sapphire and Topaz are the girls and Marley and Kojak are the boys. The girls are MUCH larger than the boys with Marley being the smallest, or runt, of the litter. All the puppies are eating well from their bottle but Marley and Kojak are on antibiotics as a precautionary measure for runny noses. Otherwise, the puppies are active, gaining weight and starting to walk around a bit. Given the fact that they just opened their eyes (all four by today), we think the puppies must have been brand new newborns when they came to us. They have been with us for 12 days now. "

mangomaddy writes, "Parker (on left) & Marcy (on right) were released from quarantine today! They were reunited to walk and play and seemed to be overjoyed to be out in the sunshine and fresh air. They also had a refreshing bath and new collars to top off their day. Since their recovery, they have been vaccinated as well. It is anticipated that Parker will be neutered sometime next week and the following week will probably be available for adoption. Marcy will take longer as she will first need to be treated for her heartworms; a treatment that will take approximately two months to complete. She will then be spayed after her heartworm treatment is completed. Both Parker and Marcy are friendly, active and will make great companions. "

mangomaddy writes, "Our beagle family is still doing well. The four puppies are still holding their own but have had their ups and downs. Each has had to have a blood transfusion. They have not broken with Parvo, but recent blood tests indicated the need for immediate blood transfusions. The problem is believed to have been caused by hookworm infestation. Hookworms are internal parasites that can cause anemia and death; particularly in fragile, young animals. The puppies have since been given a dewormer and we hope this will solve the problem. The two girls, Topaz and Sapphire, have opened their eyes! We expect the eyes of the boys, Kojak and Marley to soon follow. Topaz is shown in the picture for this entry with her beautiful, dark blue eyes looking at the camera. Every day is one more day towards health and a bright future for these puppies."

mangomaddy writes, "Our little beagle family is doing well. Parker and Marcy are shown in today's photo still in our hospital's isolation ward, but feeling much better. (Parker is the one with the red bandage on his leg and Marcy is looking on from her kennel.) The puppies are eating well, gaining weight and are quite active. They are getting stronger with each day that passes. Tomorrow they will have been with us for one week. Their eyes and ears have still not opened but should any day now. Another bit of happy news is that our privately owned parvo dog was well enough to be reunited with its family today!

provider writes, "Our young male beagle has been named Parker after the location where he was found in Lake Park It is abundantly clear that Marcy and Parker are old friends as they were ecstatic to see each other. We suspect Parker is "daddy dog" to Marcy's puppies. It was also apparent that Parker and Marcy had on matching collars. Of course, there were no tags identifying the owner of these dogs. We suspect that once it was noticed they were sick they were abandoned.
Safe Harbor is offering a $250 reward for information leading to the owner of these abandoned dogs. Abandoning animals is a crime; not only ethically and morally but legally as well. We are also concerned that because these are purebred beagles that we may be dealing with a backyard breeder who may have more sick or dying dogs that are not being medically treated. If anyone has any information, we ask that you contact Safe Harbor at (561) 747-5311 or via email at mangomaddy@aol.com . Safe Harbor is a private, not-for-profit organization and our records are not public records. Any information you give will be kept confidential. Please, if you know anything about these dogs, let us know..."
